Clocks, Dogs, and Living Mirrors: Leibniz’s New System

forthcoming in Leibniz’s Key Philosophical Writings, ed. P. Lodge & L. Strickland, under contract with Oxford University Press; in preparation

An introductory essay to Leibniz’s famous New System of the Nature of Substances, which offers an accessible account of the text’s main ideas and arguments (most importantly, Leibniz’s new presentation of the idea of a pre-established harmony among substances). In addition, the paper highlights some central points of contention raised by Leibniz’s accounts as they appear in the flurry of philosophical correspondences sparked by the publication of the New System in the Journal des savants in 1695.
